General Information

Off-Campus Access

EZProxy | Cisco VPN | Netscaler VPN

Publishers' license agreements restrict use of most electronic resources to faculty, staff, students, residents, and fellows of UT Southwestern Medical Center and employees of UT Southwestern University Hospitals. Computers or networks at Parkland Health & Hospital System or Children's Medical Center are not included.

The preferred method of accessing the Library's electronic resources from off-campus is through the Cisco Virtual Private Network (VPN) software. UT Southwestern employees who are based at either Parkland or Children's may be allowed access to Library resources.

Alternatively, authorized clients may prefer to use Netscaler VPN to access Library resources from off-campus. This version of a virtual private network is easier to install and only requires a valid Southwestern ID.

Finally, UT Southwestern residents at Parkland and other authorized users without VPN may access electronic journals (but not other electronic resources) from off-campus through EZProxy.

EZProxy

Parkland residents who also have UT Southwestern affiliation may access electronic journals off-campus through EZProxy. For Parkland residents, EZProxy offers the only way to access the Library's journals remotely. In addition, UT Southwestern employees who do not have VPN may also use EZProxy for remote access to ejournals. (The remainder of the Library's electronic resources, such as databases and ebooks, may only be accessed from off-campus via VPN).

  • From the Ejournals A to Z page, enter the name of the journal.
  • After you click on the link to the journal, the EZProxy login page will appear.
  • If you are a Parkland resident, enter your Novell username and password. (Residents who don't know their Novell username and password or are having difficulty with the EZProxy login process should contact the Parkland help desk at 25999, or from off-site at 214-590-5999).
  • If you are a UT Southwestern employee who does not have VPN, enter your SouthwesternID username and password. (If you have problems, please contact Information Resources at 214-648-7600 for further assistance).
  • Your session will remain open until you close the browser window.

Cisco Virtual Private Network (VPN)

Eligible clients will need to use the Cisco Virtual Private Network (VPN) solution provided by UT Southwestern Information Resources. VPN software runs locally on your home computer and establishes a secure, authenticated connection to the Library and other university resources through your regular connection from home.

You will need VPN software to access these Library materials from off-campus:

  • 99% of the electronic journals licensed by UT Southwestern Library, including the Ejournals A to Z list
  • Databases that are IP-restricted (This includes more than 200 of our most important resources, including Harrison's Online, MICROMEDEX, and Web of Science)
  • Full-text articles from the "Find it @ Library UT Southwestern" icons in databases such as PubMed and CINAHL (EBSCO)

In addition, there is a list of key resources accessible from off-campus without VPN.

You may obtain a copy of the VPN software and installation instructions by choosing one of the following options:

  • Follow the instructions on to the Information Resources VPN Remote Access page
  • Purchase a CD from the University Store

For general questions, please call 214-648-2001, press "0" to reach the Information Desk, or view the Ask A Librarian page. For user account setup or VPN installation questions, please call 214-648-7600 to reach Information Resources.

Netscaler VPN

The main difference between Netscaler VPN and the Cisco VPN is that the Netscaler installs only a small Java applet, rather than a much larger software program. While Netscaler should allow you access to most, if not all Library resources, including databases and ejournals, it may not provide access to as many other campus programs and resources that Cisco VPN does. More information, including downloading instructions, is available from the Information Resources Web Site (on-campus only).
