Who May Use The Library?

The mission of the UT Southwestern Library is to deliver timely, high-quality biomedical information services that meet the needs of the UT Southwestern community. The Library strives to give every member of the community biomedical information that makes a difference.

Use of Library resources is restricted to activities in support of the educational, scientific, and clinical missions of the campus. UT Southwestern reserves the right to remove anyone who fails to adhere to these policies.

Authorized Library users may fall into one of the following categories:

  1. Students, faculty, and staff of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas are the primary clientele of the UT Southwestern Library.
  1. Personnel from Parkland Health & Hospital System, Children’s Medical Center, and the Dallas County Forensic Science Department also may use the Library for valid medical/scientific/educational purposes.
  1. Anyone who holds or is eligible for a valid UT Southwestern Library card may be granted access upon application. Individuals falling under this category may use the Library for valid medical/scientific/educational purposes.
      1. Retired UT Southwestern faculty
      2. UT Southwestern alumni
      3. Local health care professionals
      4. STARS (Science Teacher Access to Resources) teachers
      5. Health Magnet Science teachers
      6. Texas Tech pharmacy students
      7. Graduates of foreign medical schools preparing for American licensure
      8. TexShare cardholders
      9. Attorneys and law office employees conducting health-related research
      10. Local librarians
      11. Library school students and individuals employed in health-related businesses or organizations that conduct research on health-related topics
  1. Patients (and patients’ family members) at the UT Southwestern University Hospitals or clinics, or at Parkland Health & Hospital System or Children’s Medical Center may be issued a one-day user card upon the written recommendation of their doctor.
  1. Students from any University of Texas campus or other university and high school students may apply for defined-term access to the Library for valid medical/scientific/educational purposes. University or school ID must be shown.
  1. Certain other categories of individuals may be allowed temporary access to the Library at the discretion of the library staff. These include:
      1. Spouses of a UT Southwestern students, faculty or staff members when accompanied by their spouse
      2. Members of the public conducting legitimate health care research
      3. Individuals who can document that they are visiting members of the Library staff (e.g., vendors, family members)
      4. Other individuals who have been pre-approved by UT Southwestern administration
