Fall Library Showcase
November 14-16, 2006

The Library offers several free presentations Nov. 14-16 in the South Campus (Main) Library as part of the Library Showcase, a semi-annual educational series featuring information resources and technology. Presentations spotlight five areas:

  • Locating national and local Census data (e.g., population estimates and projections)
  • Using RSS feeds to retrieve and organize information online
  • Improving the security of personal computers
  • Finding grant opportunities through COS (Community of Science)
  • Identifying and using selected clinical, scientific, general, and fun Internet sites

Census Data Mining: National and Local Sources — Learn to use interactive Internet tools to access Census data, such as population estimates and projections, Census 2000 briefs and special reports, American Community Survey data profiles, and data sets and tables from American FactFinder. Taught by Paula Wright of the U.S. Bureau of the Census, Dallas Regional Office.

RSS Feeds — An introductory course that explains what RSS and feed readers are, how to set up a feed reader, and how to subscribe to different feeds available.  Taught by Emily Patridge from the Library.

Computer Security — Learn basic tips to secure your personal computer, including finding and neutralizing flaws in the operating system and other applications, maintaining Web browser integrity, scanning for viruses, detecting malware, and using firewalls. EndNote — Build your bibliographies easily and footnote automatically with this popular citation management software. Search, capture, and organize citations from biomedical databases and selected online journals. A hands-on course taught by Therona Ramos from the Library.

eTBLAST — Learn about the eTBLAST search engine, an alternative to traditional keyword searching in PubMed, that uses text similarity to better identify important literature. Other electronic text-mining tools will be demonstrated. Taught by the creator of eTBLAST: Harold “Skip” Garner, Jr., Ph.D., of UT Southwestern’s McDermott Center for Human Growth and Development.

Campus Web Publishing: Getting Started — Test the Web publishing waters on campus before you jump in!  Learn about the methods of Web publishing used on campus, and explore what you need to know before diving in “head first.”  Taught by Jon Crossno from the Library.

Basic HTML — Learn to create a Web page of your own!  This class covers the basics of Web publishing and design using HTML, with illustrations in Vignette Content Management Application (CMA) and Dreamweaver 8.  Taught by Joseph Tan and Jon Crossno, both from the Library.
