Class Registration

The Library holds regular classes in database searching, research funding, evidence-based medicine (EBM) resources, and other topics. These hands-on, interactive classes are taught in the Library’s multimedia classroom in the South Campus (main) Library. Classes are offered in rotation every two weeks. Attendance is open and free to the UT Southwestern community, including the staff of Parkland and Children’s.

Registration: Click on the class you are interested in for a brief description of the course. To enroll, check the box and fill out the personal information form. Click “Submit.” You will receive an email confirmation of your enrollment.

Classes-On-Demand: The Library also offers classes tailored to meet the needs of your department, class, student organization, or research team. Classes include topics covered in the regular classes as well as Scopus, Web of Science, Consumer Health, and many more. To request these classes, call 214.648.2003 or use the Contact Us form.

Organizing Citations with EndNote

Writing an article, dissertation, or grant? Compile, organize and integrate citations into WORD without stress. After the 60-minute class, (and optional 30-minute session for individual assistance) take with you the “how to” of these EndNote features:

  • Rapid download or importing of citation information from online databases
  • Built- in download of full-text files (.pdf)
  • Management tools for EndNote libraries
  • Flexible re-formatting of bibliographies to meet required journal/editorial guidelines

Getting Better Results from Ovid MEDLINE

Find the most appropriate journal articles for patient care or basic research. This 60-minute class will cover Ovid MEDLINE essentials. After the class, there will be an optional 30-minute practice session offering individual assistance. Take advantage of Ovid’s user-friendly interface and learn how to:

  • Use Medical Subject Headings, subheadings, and keywords as needed.
  • Apply Limit options to focus retrieval to age groups, types of studies, or specific animals
  • Save, print, or email citations and access full text articles.
  • Save a permanent search strategy or set up a monthly alert on your topic.

Showcase: Searching PubMed

Take the stress out of database searching and get the results you want with this hands-on, interactive course in clarifying and focusing your PubMed searches. Learn how to use Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) and expert searching strategies to open up over 16 million references in more than 5,200 journals indexed in MEDLINE. The class includes an optional half-hour session to work on your specific project with instructor guidance and feedback

Showcase: Finding COS Funding Opportunities

Need funding? Community of Science (COS) is the largest database of grants, fellowships, and awards from around the world. This 60-minute class will cover the basics of using COS. After the class, there will be an optional 30-minute practice session offering individual assistance. This class will teach you how to

  • Search for funding opportunities that fit your needs
  • Set up personalized e-mail alerts to notify you of new funding opportunities
  • Create a COS profile to promote yourself and your research

Showcase: Grants and Proposal Writing

Designed for beginning writers of community or training grant proposals, this class presents a general overview of the grant and funding processes as well as the level of detail required in a successful proposal. Each component of the grant writing process will be addressed, including: documenting the need; identifying the target population; writing measurable objectives; developing a work plan, an evaluation plan and a dissemination plan. This class covers information useful to staff, postdocs, and students who want to apply for grants for such purposes as travel, training, or community outreach.

Objectives Participants will be able to:

  • Identify online resources to search for funding
  • Describe the basic sections of a proposal
  • Identify types of documents necessary to include with a proposal
  • Recognize common mistakes of proposal writers
  • How to meet both NIH and publisher requirements

Showcase:Advanced Proposal Writing

This advanced hands-on workshop will focus on the components of successful proposals for community grants (i.e., non-research grants). It will offer participants an opportunity to develop need statements, compose sample objectives, and methodologies. At the completion of the workshop, participants will have begun work on developing a manageable project plan and the outline for a proposal. This class covers information useful to staff, postdocs, and students who want to apply for grants for such purposes as travel, training, or community outreach.

Participants should have a project in mind to write about during the class. It is helpful but not required to have taken the “Grants and Proposal Writing” class.
