Class Registration

The Library holds regular classes in database searching, research funding, evidence-based medicine (EBM) resources, and other topics. These hands-on, interactive classes are taught in the Library’s multimedia classroom in the South Campus (main) Library. Classes are offered in rotation every two weeks. Attendance is open and free to the UT Southwestern community, including the staff of Parkland and Children’s.

Registration: Click on the class you are interested in for a brief description of the course. To enroll, check the box and fill out the personal information form. Click “Submit.” You will receive an email confirmation of your enrollment.

Classes-On-Demand: The Library also offers classes tailored to meet the needs of your department, class, student organization, or research team. Finding COS Funding Opportunities

Need funding? Community of Science (COS) is the largest database of grants, fellowships, and awards from around the world. This 60-minute class will cover the basics of using COS. After the class, there will be an optional 30-minute practice session offering individual assistance. This class will teach you how to

  • Search for funding opportunities that fit your needs
  • Set up personalized e-mail alerts to notify you of new funding opportunities
  • Create a COS profile to promote yourself and your research

Getting Better Results from Ovid MEDLINE

Find the most appropriate journal articles for patient care or basic research. This 60-minute class will cover Ovid MEDLINE essentials. After the class, there will be an optional 30-minute practice session offering individual assistance. Take advantage of Ovid’s user-friendly interface and learn how to:

  • Use Medical Subject Headings, subheadings, and keywords as needed.
  • Apply Limit options to focus retrieval to age groups, types of studies, or specific animals
  • Save, print, or email citations and access full text articles.
  • Save a permanent search strategy or set up a monthly alert on your topic.

Organizing Citations with EndNote

Writing an article, dissertation, or grant? Compile, organize and integrate citations into WORD without stress. This class is a hands-on introduction to the “how to” of these time and labor-saving EndNote features:

  • Downloading or importing citation information from online databases
  • Built-in full-text file (.pdf) download function
  • Custom groups for organizing your EndNote library citations
  • Flexible re-formatting of bibliographies to meet required journal/editorial guidelines

Searching PubMed

Take the stress out of database searching and get the results you want with this hands-on, interactive course in clarifying and focusing your PubMed searches. Learn how to use Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) and expert searching strategies to open up over 16 million references in more than 5,200 journals indexed in MEDLINE. The class includes an optional half-hour session to work on your specific project with instructor guidance and feedback

Showcase Workshop: Perspectives on Health and Human Rights

In what ways are health and human rights related? Is health care a right or a commodity? How do health policies and practices impact human rights? What are the health effects of human rights violations? What are the links between the promotion and protection of health and the promotion and protection of human rights? Showcase Workshop: Using Reaxys

Reaxys is a web-based “one-dashboard” interface for three prestigious chemical information databases: CrossFire Beilstein, CrossFire Gmelin, and Patent Chemistry Database (PCD) . It allows searching by substances: fully searchable chemical structures; by reactions: fully searchable single and multi-step reactions; and by citations: indexed from the primary organic, inorganic and organomatellic chemistry journal literature going back to 1772 and patent literature. Showcase Workshop: Working with the New SciFinder

Researchers are familiar with SciFinder as a research discovery tool that allows you to explore the Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) databases. This workshop will highlight the new capabilities of the web-based SciFinder, such as how to create email alerts by topic as well as by journal; how to identify if a molecule (particular structure drawn) has biological activity or is part of the structure of a natural product; and how to locate spectral and physical data.
