Topics

Links to public access policies for some of the most frequently used ejournals on campus are listed below. These policies were accurate as of March 18, 2008, but it is up to you to verify your rights as an author when your manuscript is accepted by a journal.

American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology
http://www.elsevier.com/wps/find/authorshome.authors/nihauthorrequest
Elsevier will submit the final version of the author’s manuscript to PubMed Central on behalf of the author. Public access will be made available 12 months after publication.

Annals of Internal Medicine
http://www.annals.org/shared/author_info.html#nih-funded-articles
Authors should ask the Annals production editor to send the final published version of the manuscript to them. Authors may then submit the final version to PubMed Central with an embargo period of six months.

Blood
http://bloodjournal.hematologylibrary.org/authors/authorguide.dtl#policy_NIH
Blood will submit articles to PubMed Central on the author’s behalf.

Cancer Research
http://cancerres.aacrjournals.org/misc/ifora.shtml#l
The American Association for Cancer Research grants permission to authors to submit their articles to PubMed Central without formal request under the following conditions:

  • Only the accepted manuscript is deposited, not the edited and formatted paper as published in the journal.
  • Authors stipulate that PubMed Central may release the paper for public access 1 year after its print publication, not sooner.
  • Authors acknowledge the published source of the material.

Cell
http://www.elsevier.com/wps/find/authorshome.authors/nihauthorrequest
Elsevier will submit the final version of the author’s manuscript to PubMed Central on behalf of the author. Public access will be available 12 months after publication.

Chest
http://www.chestjournal.org/misc/PolicyInstruxA.pdf
The author should submit the article to PubMed Central. CHEST strongly requests that authors include the following disclaimer in the deposited article:

"This author-produced electronic version of a manuscript accepted for publication in CHEST has not yet been subjected to final copyediting and proofreading and is not the definitive publisher authenticated version of record that will be published in CHEST in print and online. The American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) and the Editors of CHEST disclaim any responsibility or liability for any errors or omissions in this early author-produced electronic version of the manuscript or in any other version derived from it by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) or any other third party. The final publisher-authenticated version of record will be made freely and publically available on the CHEST website (www.chestjournal.org) 12 months after its publication in CHEST."

Circulation
http://circ.ahajournals.org/misc/ifora.shtml
The author should deposit the “preprint” form of the manuscript. The American Heart Association permits, and requires, that when submitting the manuscript to PMC that authors designate a six-month delay from the date of final publication by The American Heart Association. Additionally, the AHA requests that, in your final submission to PMC, the following disclaimer be placed on the title page of your manuscript:

"This is an un-copyedited author manuscript that was accepted for publication in Circulation, copyright The American Heart Association. This may not be duplicated or reproduced, other than for personal use or within the “Fair Use of Copyrighted Materials” (section 107, title 17, U.S. Code) without prior permission of the copyright owner, The American Heart Association. The final copyedited article, which is the version of record, can be found at http://circ.ahajournals.org. The American Heart Association disclaims any responsibility or liability for errors or omissions in this version of the manuscript or in any version derived from it by the National Institutes of Health or other parties."

Critical Care Medicine
http://www.ccmjournal.com/pt/re/ccm/authorinfo.htm
As a service to authors, Lippincott Williams & Wilkins will deposit the post-print of an article based on research funded in whole or in part by the National Institutes of Health, Wellcome Trust, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, or other funding agencies in PubMed Central. The revised Copyright Transfer Agreement provides the mechanism.

JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association
http://jama.ama-assn.org/misc/authors.dtl#depositing

Authors are permitted to submit an article to PubMed Central on the following conditions:

  1. Permission is granted only for manuscripts reporting research funded by not-for-profit organizations to be deposited in not-for-profit, publicly available repositories.
  2. Permission is granted to post only the manuscript reporting research that was submitted and accepted for publication but not the final, edited, formatted, and published article.
  3. Authors must ensure that the posted manuscript links back to the published article on the JAMA Web site to provide readers with access to the final reviewed and edited version plus any corrections and letters, as well as the article-related features only available on the JAMA Web site.
  4. Authors who submit their manuscripts to an approved public repository, such as PubMed Central, must indicate that the manuscript may not be made available to the public sooner than 6 months after publication in JAMA.
If authors adhere to these requirements, they may submit the final accepted version of the manuscript to the repository, if and only if the repository ensures that the deposited manuscript will not be made available to the public during the 6 month embargo following publication in JAMA.

Journal of Biological Chemistry (JBC)
http://www.jbc.org/misc/JBCRepository.shtml
The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) will automatically deposit articles on behalf of authors as a service. ASBMB/JBC, as copyright holder, grants permission to all authors to deposit their accepted manuscripts in PubMed Central. During submission of a manuscript for review, authors will be required to indicate whether or not the work resulted from NIH funding. If NIH funding is involved and the paper is ultimately accepted for publication, the final redacted version will automatically and immediately be sent to the NIH on behalf of the authors. This will completely satisfy the NIH mandate, and authors need do nothing else. This service will be free for ASBMB members and will cost $50 for non-members.

Journal of Clinical Investigation
http://static.the-jci.org/content_assets/admin/forms/jcicopyright.pdf
Authors retain rights to present their articles without prior permission in original, revised, adapted, or derivative form, provided that all such use is for personal or nonprofit (and noncommercial) benefit, is consistent with any employment agreement, and references the original publication citation. This includes submission to institutional and/or funding-body repositories.

Authors of manuscripts that fall under the NIH Public Access Policy have the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry’s permission to submit their accepted manuscript to PubMed Central provided that the manuscript is made publicly available no sooner than six months after the official date of print publication. The “accepted manuscript” is the final version accepted for journal publication that includes all modifications from the publishing peer review process but does not include author-approved editing/copyediting and formatting by the journal’s editorial staff during the publication process.

Journal of Immunology
http://www.jimmunol.org/misc/nihpublicaccesspolicy.shtml

http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/misc/policies.shtml
After an article has been accepted for publication, the journal licenses back to the author the right to submit the final published version of the work 12 months after publication in the journal to a publicly accessible (Internet) institutional archive, hosted either by the author’s academic institution, employer, or funding entity such as NIH.

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery
https://www.editorialmanager.com/prs/

The revised Copyright Transfer Agreement provides the mechanism.

Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America: PNAS
http://www.pnas.org/subscriptions/open-access.shtml
PNAS automatically deposits the final, published version of all its content, regardless of funding, in PubMed Central and makes it free at both PMC and PNAS just six months after publication. It is important for authors who wish to deposit a manuscript in PMC to give PMC a release date of six months after print publication in PNAS. Alternatively, for authors who want their work made free at both PMC and PNAS immediately upon online publication, it is important to choose the PNAS "open access" option when the paper is accepted by PNAS, and to give PMC a release date of online publication in PNAS. The open access surcharge is $850 for authors from institutions with a site license/open access membership. Via either route, authors do not need to deposit author manuscripts in PMC because PNAS will automatically deposit the final published version for public release.

Science
http://www.sciencemag.org/about/authors/prep/gen_info.dtl#access
For research papers created under grants for which the authors are required by their funding agencies to make their research results publicly available, Science allows posting of the accepted version of the paper to the funding body's archive or designated repository (such as PubMed Central) six months after publication, provided that a link to the final version published in Science is included. (Details on this can be found in the license agreement for authors.)
