NIH Public Access Policy Guide
Access Policies to Frequently Used Ejournals

<< Back to NIH Public Access Policy Guide Home

Topics

Links to the public access policies for some of the most frequently used ejournals on campus are listed below. These policies were accurate as of April 9, 2009, but it is up to you to verify your rights as an author when your manuscript is accepted by a journal.

In many cases, the journal only allows the author to submit the accepted manuscript to PubMed Central. The “accepted manuscript” is the final version accepted for journal publication that includes all modifications from the peer review process but does not include author-approved editing/copyediting and formatting by the journal’s editorial staff during the publication process.

American Journal of Cardiology
http://www.elsevier.com/wps/find/authorshome.authors/nihauthorrequest
Elsevier will submit the final accepted version of the author’s manuscript to PubMed Central on behalf of the author. Public access will be made available 12 months after publication.

American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology
http://www.elsevier.com/wps/find/authorshome.authors/nihauthorrequest
Elsevier will submit the final accepted version of the author’s manuscript to PubMed Central on behalf of the author. Public access will be made available 12 months after publication.

Annals of Internal Medicine
http://www.annals.org/shared/author_info.html#nih-funded-articles
Authors may submit the accepted version of their manuscript to PubMed Central with an embargo period of six (6) months. Authors must make sure their articles display the following disclaimer immediately after the title:

"This is the pre-publication, author-produced version of a manuscript accepted for publication in Annals of Internal Medicine. This version does not include post-acceptance editing and formatting. The American College of Physicians, the publisher of Annals of Internal Medicine, is not responsible for the content or presentation of the author-produced accepted version of the manuscript or any version that a third party derives from it. Readers who wish to access the definitive published version of this manuscript and any ancillary material related to this manuscript (correspondence, corrections, editorials, linked articles, etc…) should go to www.annals.org or to the print issue in which the article appears. Those who cite this manuscript should cite the published version, as it is the official version of record."

Biochemistry
http://pubs3.acs.org/4authors/copyright/nih/index.html
The American Chemical Society requires NIH-funded authors to fill out an NIH Policy Addendum to the ACS Copyright Status Form. Alternate addenda or modifications to the ACS Copyright Status Form will not be accepted in lieu of this NIH Policy Addendum.

ACS offers NIH-funded authors three options to fulfill the NIH Public Access policy requirement of manuscript deposit:

  • Option A: The ACS deposits the final, published article on the author's behalf, for immediate open availability via the ACS AuthorChoice fee-based option. Stated NIH policy allows authors who elect this option to use grant or contract funds in payment of open access publishing fees levied in connection with ACS AuthorChoice. Details about the ACS AuthorChoice option are available at http://pubs.acs.org/4authors/authorchoice/.
  • Option B: The author deposits the final, peer-reviewed manuscript with NIH, for open availability 12 months after publication. This option provides a no-fee mechanism by which authors may comply fully with the requirements of the NIH Policy mandate.
  • Option C: ACS deposits on behalf of the author the final, peer-reviewed manuscript with NIH, for open availability 12 months after publication. This service is provided at no charge to ACS members in good standing and invoiced at a fee of $100 for non-members.

Cancer Research
http://cancerres.aacrjournals.org/misc/ifora.shtml#l
The American Association for Cancer Research grants permission to authors to submit their articles to PubMed Central without formal request under the following conditions:

  • Only the accepted manuscript is deposited, not the edited and formatted paper as published in the journal.
  • Authors stipulate that PubMed Central may release the paper for public access 1 year after its print publication, not sooner.
  • Authors ensure the published source of the material (the journal citation) is included in the deposited version.
  • A link to the final PDF version of the article on the publisher’s Web site (www.aacrjournals.org) is included.

The American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) and the Editors of CHEST disclaim any responsibility or liability for any errors or omissions in this early author-produced electronic version of the manuscript or in any other version derived from it by the NIH or any other third party. The final publisher-authenticated version of record will be made freely and publically available on the CHEST website (www.chestjournal.org) 12 months after its publication in CHEST."

Circulation
http://circ.ahajournals.org/misc/ifora.shtml
The author should deposit the accepted version of the manuscript. The American Heart Association requires that when submitting the manuscript to PubMed Central authors designate a 6-month delay from the date of final publication by The American Heart Association. Additionally, the AHA requests that the following disclaimer be placed on the title page of your manuscript:

"This is an un-copyedited author manuscript that was accepted for publication in Circulation, copyright The American Heart Association. This may not be duplicated or reproduced, other than for personal use or within the "Fair Use of Copyrighted Materials" (section 107, title 17, U.S. Code) without prior permission of the copyright owner, The American Heart Association. The final copyedited article, which is the version of record, can be found at http://circ.ahajournals.org. The American Heart Association disclaims any responsibility or liability for errors or omissions in this version of the manuscript or in any version derived from it by the National Institutes of Health or other parties."
