The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently made public access to all peer-reviewed articles arising from NIH-funded research mandatory.

Beginning April 7, 2008, any article supported all or in part by an NIH grant must be submitted to PubMed Central (PMC) within 12 months of its publication date.

Effective May 25, 2008, anyone submitting an application, proposal, or progress report to the NIH must include the PMC or NIH Manuscript Submission reference number when citing applicable articles that arise from their NIH-funded research.
