The American College of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) is responsible for evaluating and accrediting graduate medical education programs. This site allows potential residents to view the requirements for programs in each specialty and subspecialty.

 

American Board of Medical Specialties

ABMS is the umbrella organization for the 24 approved medical specialty boards in the U.S., which develop and utilize professional and educational standards for the evaluation and certification of physician specialists. Print copies The Official ABMS Directory of Board Certified Medical Specialists may be located by searching the Library's online catalog.

Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates

ECFMG assesses the readiness of graduates of foreign medical schools to enter residency or fellowship programs in the United States that are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Includes information useful to graduates of non-U.S. medical schools who wish to attend residency in the United States. This site includes application information, residency requirements, contacts, and useful links.

 

Fellowship and Residency Electronic Interactive Database (FREIDA)

FREIDA is the American Medical Association's Web version of the Fellowship and Residency Electronic Interactive Database. You can search by both multiple states and mulitple specialties. The information provided for each program is basic but informative, including start dates, post-graduate year schedules, and salaries.

An invaluable, annual resource for fourth-year medical students at UT Southwestern Medical Center that gives an overview of the residency application/interview/match process, indicates ways to get information about residency programs, suggests ways to assess residency programs before applying, explains how to obtain applications for residency programs, gives information about writing a résumé and personal statement, explains how to arrange and submit a rank order list and discuss Match Week activities, and much more.

 

National Medical Fellowships

A non-profit organization dedicated to increasing the number of underrepresented minority physicians in the United States by providing financial support and other incentives to underrepresented minority medical students. Offers fellowship programs to minority medical students that provide the opportunity to study or serve in internships within various areas, including biomedical research, community medicine, pediatric nutrition, and substance abuse research and treatment. Priority is given to second- and third-year students, and fellowships are not renewable.

 

National Residency Matching Program

NRMP -- more informally known as "The Match" -- is the primary method of placing residents and interns. Applicants and residency programs evaluate and rank one another, and then a computerized process pairs applicants with programs based on the ranked preferences. The site offers registrants information, including Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs), schedules, policies, and directories, as well as forms, publications, and details about the matching algorithm used. Access to the main match site requires AAMC ID and password.

 

Resident and Fellow Section of the American Medical Association

This special interest group of the American Medical Association (AMA) offers residents the chance to begin their medical careers involved in the largest physician's association. This site highlights the services that the AMA offers its resident members, including discussion forums, reports of issues of importance to residents, grants and awards, and information on the assembly.

 

ResidentWeb

Founded in 1999 by residents, ResidentWeb provides a Web portal to current and future residents. Key features of this site include a nearly comprehensive search for residency and fellowship programs, pearls of advice, discussion and chat groups, news, and clinical resources.
