Social networking sites are online communities of people linked through common interests or a theme. These sites encourage interactions and/or collaboration among their users. Some social networking sites have been developed to help researchers and clinicians connect with colleagues, organize resources, and stay on top of new developments in their field. Social bookmarking sites are a specific type of social site where the locations of and information about Web pages may be saved. Social bookmarking sites for academics save citation information for electronic articles on sites with which they are compatible and export that citation information as reference lists.
