Dallas Medical History, 1890-1975: A Digital Collection

Introduction

The Digital Collection contains images—mostly photographs—from the UT Southwestern Archives and History of Medicine collections in the Library. Each image is dated and accompanied by a description of the subject matter. The Digital Collection is made up of two components, the ”Repository” and the “Exhibit.”

Repository: Dallas Medical Images, 1890-1975

St. Paul Sanitarium on Bryan Street, with 1916 additionA collection of 500+ images, which portray institutions, people, and events, that have played a role in the progress of medicine and medical education in Dallas.

Of the 500+ images, about 200 portray the history of UT Southwestern’s predecessor institutions (e.g., Southwestern Medical College). Another 200 images illustrate the history of St. Paul Hospital and its predecessor, St. Paul Sanitarium. The remaining approximately 100 images portray other institutions, people, and events illustrating the history of medicine in Dallas, including about 40 images representing Parkland Memorial Hospital. Exhibit: Medical Milestones in Dallas, 1890-1975: A Photographic History

Surgical operation at St. Paul Hospital on Bryan StreetAn exhibit of 60 images, arranged in chronological order, illustrating highlights in the development of medical care in Dallas. Expanded descriptions explain the significance and context of the subject matter. To enrich this exhibit, 13 images are included from the Dallas Public Library Texas/Dallas History and Archives collection, and from other collections of historic images. All images in this exhibit, except for some from outside sources, are also included in the “Dallas Medical Images, 1890-1975” repository. View exhibit.
