Brief Synopsis of the Blood and/or Body Fluid
Exposure Policy

1.  Immedately:

a.  Wash and rinse the affected area with soap and water.  Flush mucus membranes with water as soon as feasible.

b.  Contact your supervisor to report the exposure.

c.  Page the Exposure Control Program (24 hours) at 214-588-6263 to report the exposure and receive further instructions.

2.  The person who answers the page will direct you to the Zale Lipshy Health Referral Center.  Staff will draw appropriate labs, initiate treatment and prophylaxis, complete paperwork, and plan follow-up.

3.  If exposure occurs at the Veterans Administration Medical Center (VANTHS) or another center, abide by that medical center's exposure policy (you may want to use our policy as a reference).  Report incident to Southwestern Exposure Control Program for follow-up care.

4.  Cost of initial testing and any indicated prophylaxis treatment not covered by insurance will be paid by UT Southwestern.
