1.21     Posting Notices on Campus

Use bulletin boards located near classrooms and student mailboxes. Do not use doors, windows, furniture, trees, sleeping colleagues, pillars, posts or objects not apparently a bulletin board. Commercial notices are not allowed. Materials must be dated and may be posted for only 30 days. Most bulletin boards are clearly labeled. Please use the appropriate bulletin board. Offering free kittens may seem to fit on the housing bulletin board...but not really.

1.22     Research, Student participation in, including conflict of interest, misconduct/fraud in research, and research supported by grants or contracts

Students at UT Southwestern may have opportunities to participate in research during their educational experience. That participation carries with it responsibilities, including, but not limited to, adherence to high ethical standards in every facet of the research. Accordingly, students must comply with the same procedures as faculty and staff in dealing with the varied issues arising in research, such as conflicts of interest; misconduct/fraud in research; obligations to grantors of participation in research supported by grants or contracts whether by the federal or state government or private sources. The Associate Dean for Research administers all policies related to research.

1.23     Satisfactory Academic Progression

The UT Southwestern Medical School catalogue provides a detailed description of the requirements for satisfactory academic progress including information as to the method by which academic deficiencies are handled.

1.24     Sexual Harassment

Southwestern Medical School subscribes to the policy of The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas that all students share an environment that is free from all forms of harassment -- this includes sexual harassment.

Sexual harassment does not refer to occasional compliments of a socially acceptable nature. It refers to behavior which includes, but is not limited to: repeated offensive flirtations of a sexual nature, unwelcome advances, propositions, continued or repeated verbal comments of a sexual nature about an individual on his/her appearance, the display of sexually suggestive objects or abusive physical contact.

In addition, UT Southwestern does not tolerate the use of threats or assurances, whether overt or implicit, to gain sexual favors in return for a promise of a grade, promotion, or any other type of advancement. Behavior of this nature will bring prompt and certain disciplinary action, including possible dismissal or termination of employment.

UT Southwestern encourages any student who believes that he or she has been subjected to sexual harassment by anyone (including fellow students, faculty, employees or visitors) to immediately bring such actions to the attention of the dean, the associate deans for student affairs, associate vice president for student affairs, the head of a department, or a course director. UT Southwestern will take appropriate corrective action, including disciplinary measures when justified, to remedy violations of this policy.

1.25     Smoking

Not allowed on the campus inside or outside except for the loading dock near the cafeteria.

1.26     Use of UT Southwestern Campus and Facilities

1.26.1     Definition

UT Southwestern Campus or Facilities is limited to property, buildings, and facilities owned or controlled by UT Southwestern that are maintained and used for programs and activities related to the role and mission of UT Southwestern.

1.26.2     General Use Restrictions

The property, buildings, and facilities owned or controlled by UT Southwestern (herein called Facilities of Campus) are not open for assembly, speech, or other activities as are public streets and sidewalks. UT Southwestern's obligation to maintain an effective and efficient medical school, graduate school and school of allied health sciences, requires that the time, place, and manner of assembly, speech, and other activities on the UT Southwestern Campus be regulated. Acting pursuant to the authority of Chapters 65 and 51 of the Texas Education Code, and Chapter VI, Section 6 of the Regents' Rules, UT Southwestern has adopted sections, including this and sections 2.6 of its Handbook regulating the use of Campus and Facilities. These regulations apply to students in the same manner they apply to faculty, staff, and the public.

No person or student or group of persons or students may use the UT Southwestern Campus for any purpose other than for the regular programs or activities related to the role and mission of UT Southwestern, unless authorized by the Regents' Rules, the Handbook of Operating Procedures, or the applicable federal, state, and local laws.

It is unlawful for any student, who is on the UT Southwestern Campus, to refuse to identify himself or herself in response to a request by an Institutional Representative, defined as: any campus police or security officer; any administrative officer or attorney of UT Southwestern; any executive or administrative officer, or member of the Board of Regents of the UT System. Any student who refuses to identify himself or herself in accordance with this section may be convicted of a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of not more than $200. In addition, the student is subject to disciplinary action.

1.26.3     Speech and Assembly Area

UT Southwestern has designated a "free speech" area on Campus. Peaceful assembly and speech activities conducted in accordance with applicable state law, Regents' Rules and other UT Southwestern policies may be conducted in this area without prior administrative approval. The area designated is in front of the Skillern Student or "M" building, or in the area between the Skillern Student Building and the Green Biomedical Research or Y building.

1.27     USMLE Step 1 Policy

Medical students take the USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination) Step 1 prior to the third year. With approval from the deans of student affairs, students with special circumstances may take Step 1 at a later date; however, all students must sit for the Step 1 prior to the fourth year. Students who sit for the Step 1, but do not achieve a passing score may complete the third year. UT Southwestern medical students must attain a passing score on the USMLE Step 1 in order to progress through the fourth year.

More detailed information about this policy or the USMLE may be obtained from the Associate Dean for Student Affairs. In addition, the Registrar's Office will distribute information about registration for the examination at the appropriate time.

1.27.1     USMLE Step 2 Policy

UT Southwestern highly recommends students take this exam early in their senior year. Having passed Step 2 will increase the student's attractiveness to residency programs. In addition, residencies in Texas now require all incoming interns to be Step 3 eligible, i.e. they must have successfully completed all parts of Steps 1 and 2. Passage of USMLE both parts of Step 2 is a requirement for graduation from UT Southwestern.

1.28     Withdrawal from UT Southwestern

Students contemplating withdrawal should first speak with their designated program or the Associate Dean for Student Affairs. If a decision to withdraw if final, the withdrawl must be submitted in writing to the student's program of study or the Associate Dean for Student Affairs. Prior to leaving, students must return all issued equipment and keys (e.g. microscopes, pagers, lab carrel keys, etc.), all library materials and, if a recipient of financial aid, check out with a financial aid counselor.
