Along with a thorough understanding of general neurosurgical disease, Dr. Welch provides the practice with
expertise in the management of patients with cerebrovascular disease from both surgical and endovascular perspectives. He joins Dr. Jonathan White in the specialized care of patients with cerebrovascular
disease.
Dr. Welch's academic endeavors are based in the UT Southwestern Microvascular Laboratory where he serves as director and instructs residents in surgical approach and microvascular technique.
UT Southwestern is benefiting from Dr. Welch's collaborations with the Utrecht Medical Center in Utrecht, The Netherlands, by making our medical center the second site in the U.S. for the use of a revolutionary
laser technique for cerebrovascular bypass, slated to begin in 2007.
Originally from the Washington,D.C. area, Dr. Welch received educational degrees from Morehouse College and Howard University College of
Medicine, where he pursued his interests in the sciences, world literature and Spanish culture. He completed his general neurosurgical training at the George Washington University Medical Center, Washington,
D.C., where he gained significant experience in skull base techniques under the tutelage of Dr Laligam Sekhar. He then completed fellowship training in cerebrovascular and endovascular neurosurgery at UT
Southwestern.
Dr. Welch is an active member of the College of Neurological Surgeons, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, and the American Medical Association. He maintains fluency in Spanish
and is an avid cyclist.
