UT Southwestern Medical Center has been actively
protecting and licensing intellectual property for over 25 years. Invention disclosures
have risen from only one or two per year in the 1970's to approximately 100 per year
currently. Intellectual properties developed at UT Southwestern are managed by the Office
for Technology Development, which has received more than 1300 intellectual property
disclosures in the fields of biotechnology, medical devices, software, and videotapes.
Almost 300 U.S. patents in a wide variety of scientific disciplines have issued naming UT
Southwestern inventors. The goal of the Office for Technology Development is to license UT
Southwestern developed technologies to companies that have demonstrated a commitment to
developing commercially valuable products for the benefit of society and
revenue generation for the institution. Recently, the office has expanded its
efforts to include developing a biotechnology incubator in Dallas. This will allow the
city to take advantage of the discoveries at UT Southwestern and diversify the Dallas
economy by sponsoring start-up companies. The Office for Technology Development looks
forward to being an integral part of the success of the biotechnology industry in Dallas.
