The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center

is where researchers seek knowledge fundamental to the treatment and prevention of disease. Where physicians, scientists and other health-care professionals are trained. Where state-of-the-art, compassionate medical care is delivered.

The medical center includes three degree-granting institutions: Southwestern Medical School, Southwestern Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and Southwestern Allied Health Sciences School. The schools train more than 4000 medical graduates, allied health students, residents and postdoctoral fellows each year.

Although its setting is urban, the 60-acre campus has a large recreation center completed in 2002, tennis and basketball courts, jogging paths, and a six-acre wooded bird sanctuary. 

Research is one of the fortes of UT Southwestern.  Over 2,500 research projects are under way with more than $340 million in annual funding.  UT Southwestern ranked first among the world’s medical schools in the production of highly cited research papers in molecular biology and genetics between 1992-2002. 

Physical Plant building space includes 7.3 million square feet and there is an additional 442,000 square feet in projects under construction. 

Faculty include:  

·        Four active Nobel laureates (more than any other medical school in the world!!)

·        15 members of the National Academy of Sciences

·        17 members of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences

·        12 members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences

·        More than 200 specialists listed in Best Doctors in America: Central Region

·        The medical center is rated as one of the top biomedical research centers in the nation by Science Watch.

Patient Care is provided by 1,464 full-time and 2,100 volunteer or part-time faculty along with approximately 1,000 residents and 500 fellows. Almost 89,000 hospitalized patients and 2.1 million outpatient visits provide a superior resource for teaching and clinical investigation.  They system’s hospitals delivered 16,500 babies.  Southwestern Medical Center physicians attend to patients at Zale Lipshy University Hospital, St. Paul University Hospital, Parkland Health & Hospital System, Children's Medical Center Dallas, the Dallas Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Moncrief Cancer Center and a number of other affiliated hospitals and clinical centers in Dallas, Fort Worth and North Texas
