International Applicants for a Rotation or Fellowship

We invite foreign medical graduates to join our Medical Toxicology Program in two different ways.

SHORT TERM ROTATION

What is this?

This is a 4-8 week rotation on our toxicology service.  You participate in the typical daily activities of patient care and education.  During the 2006-2007 academic year, we will have ~ 65 medical students, physicians, and pharmacy students rotate onto our service.

Who is eligible?

This is open to physicians, pharmacists, and students.

What would I do on this rotation?

Please see the Web site section on “Service Rotation for Residents and Students”

What is the language expectation of those who do a rotation with us?

English is the language used during the rotation.  A rotator should have a basic understanding of the English language.  We will likely wish to talk to you on the phone before accepting you to do the rotation.

Who is responsible for expenses for this rotation?

You are responsible for all expenses related to the rotation.  You would need to arrange transportation, lodging, food, and transportation within Dallas.

Are there limitations as to what you what you can do clinically while you are on the rotation?

You would be here in an “observer” status.  This means that you can talk to patients; however, you can not do a physical exam on them.  However, this limitation would not affect the quality of your rotation.  Most of our work is reviewing cases in a classroom.  We do go as a group to see patients on Parkland Memorial Hospital and in Children's Medical Center.

Is there a best time to do this rotation?

The best time to do the rotation is January through the end of May.  We may be able to get you into a rotation in July through the end of November, but this is more difficult.

Do I have to be ECFMG certified to do a rotation?

No

What type of VISA is required?

You may do this rotation with a B-VISA.

FORMAL MEDICAL TOXICOLOGY FELLOWSHIP (24 MONTHS)

What is needed before you can do the 24-month fellowship in Medical Toxicology?

You must be:

(1)   a physician, and

(2)   ECFMG certified

What type of VISA is needed?

A J1 VISA with ECFMG sponsorship.

Would I be paid?

If you are selected to be one of our Medical Toxicology Fellows, you would become an employee of Parkland Memorial Hospital.  You would receive a salary and benefits.  Details of this are in the “Salary and Benefits Program” that is in the “Fellowship Program in Medical Toxicology”

Will I be eligible to take the Medical Toxicology Board Exam sponsored by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS)?

You would had to have done a residency that has been accredited by the American Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) before doing the Toxicology Fellowship.

Can you do the Medical Toxicology Fellowship even if you are not eligible to take the United States Board exam?

Yes; you can do the Medical Toxicology Fellowship even if you are not eligible to take the ABMS sponsored board exam.  You would be presented a certificate of training from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center reflecting that you did the training.

What type of previous training and certification would have to be done by a foreign medical graduate before being accepted into the Medical Toxicology Fellowship?

Emergency Medicine, Pediatrics, Preventive Medicine, or Internal Medicine

Would you have to have a license to practice medicine in the state of Texas?

You do not need a true license.  However, you would have to have a training “Permit” that is sponsored by UT Southwestern Medical Center and is provided by the Texas State Board Medical Examiners (TSMBE).  This process is initiated by the Medical Toxicology Program Director.  He informs the Parkland housestaff (residency) office that he/she would like to bring someone into the fellowship.  Parkland then begins to work with the TSBME office to get a Permit.
